Key players:

Shakib Al Hasan (BAN): The Bangladesh captain and all-rounder is one of the most influential players in world cricket. He has been in good form with the ball, taking 12 wickets in his last seven ODIs at an economy rate of 4.65. He also scored a half-century against Ireland in May 2023. He will need to lead from the front with both bat and ball in this crucial game.

Ibrahim Zadran (AFG): The young opener has been a revelation for Afghanistan since his debut in June 2022. He has scored 827 runs in 16 ODIs at an average of 59.07 and a strike rate of 91.71. He has four centuries and three fifties to his name, including a career-best 156 against Pakistan in August 2023. He will look to continue his prolific run and give Afghanistan a solid start.

Team news:

Bangladesh will be under pressure to win this game after losing their opening match to Sri Lanka by 91 runs. They will need to improve their batting performance, which was exposed by the Sri Lankan spinners. They may consider bringing in Liton Das or Towhid Hridoy to strengthen their top order. Their bowling department, however, looks settled with Hasan Mahmud, Ebadot Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman leading the attack.

Afghanistan will be playing their first match of the tournament and will hope to repeat their recent success against Bangladesh. They won a three-match ODI series in Bangladesh by 2-1 in July 2023, with Fazalhaq Farooqi taking nine wickets in the series. They will also rely on their top-order batsmen, especially Ibrahim Zadran, who has scored four centuries in his last six ODIs. Their middle order, however, remains a concern as they lack experience and consistency.
